Wow, what a movie experience! “Kagemusha (The Shadow Warrior) ” is my accepted film from content Akira Kurosawa, which is saying one heck of a lot when one considers “Rashomon”, “Seven Samurai”, and “Ran”. I sat riveted to the television hide during the entire presentation. It is a chronicle of a petty thief who, because he looks very worthy like the huge Warlord Shingen, is given the chance to redeem himself and play the immense Warlord’s double. The heart of the film is the inner change and current found strength that progresses through the thief as he learns to become the Warlord. Awesome in its imagery, “Kagemusha” will mesmerize you and recede you. Between 1 and 10, this much Kurosawa classic gets a 10. With his passing, along with Stanley Kubrick, the world has lost two spacious treasures.

KAGEMUSHA is the stout 1980 drama keen a clan of 16th-Century Japanese warlords who want to deceive their enemies by having a favorite thief impersonate their murdered leader. This is a thought-provoking film about reality and illusion, as well as a visually engrossing work filled with many striking scenes and compositions that Kurosawa films are known for. A memorable 6-minute opening shot of three identical-looking men, an clarify dream sequence, and a harrowing montage of the aftermath of the final battle are among some of Kurosawa’s finest moments in his long film career. Lead actor Tatsuya Nakadai was only in his 40s when he made KAGEMUSHA, playing a great older man and effectively conveying the guile and conflicted feelings of the imposter. Nakadai would also play the lead role in Kurosawa’s next film, RAN, 5 years later, again unrecognizably playing a powerful older man.

Criterion has released the definitive video edition for KAGEMUSHA: a Region-1, 2-disc DVD of the uncut, 180-minute version of film. The anamorphic widescreen video quality is generally very advantageous, except for some occasional graininess. The current Japanese audio is in Dolby Digital 4.0 surround (3 front, and 1 mono rear channels), although surround effects are infrequently faded.

The best supplement on the disc is Stephen Prince’s full-length audio commentary, which, due to the film’s length, is able to interpret on many topics in gigantic details. Considerable of Prince’s narration (I would say half of it) is more on the historical background of the film’s period than the filmmaking and art of the film. He compares distinct set details against historical facts to reveal how Kurosawa uses his artistic license to deny his possess ideas. Regarding the film itself, he emphasizes that this is an atypical Kurosawa film in that its hero tries to conform to the prevailing social order, unlike the nonconformist rebels and outcasts in past films such as SEVEN SAMURAI or YOJIMBO. On the film’s artistry, he observantly points out that in a film about illusions, many of the key events in the site are aptly NOT shown on cover. He also provides a mountainous analysis on Kurosawa’s most explain dream sequence.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Kagemusha – Criterion Collection! Click Here

Prince also does a suited job of pointing out the differences between the shortened, 162-min international version and this 180-min uncut version. The longer version does not have “20 minutes of footage spicy Kenshin Uesugi”, as misreported at IMDB. The added scenes are, in fact, merely short, trimmed scenes and shots that are sprinkled all over the film. They add to the overall continuity, without altering anything in the main set line. A majority of the added scenes are honest too trivial to mention or to even gaze. The few great ones include a noteworthy longer montage of the aftermath of the final battle, and a wholly added scene where the erroneous Shingen is being examined by the Jesuit priest physician — this scene also has the ample Takashi Shimura’s only appearance in the film, seen for the first time on this DVD by viewers outside of Japan.

For Kurosawa fans, the second best feature on the disc is perhaps the collection of impressionistic paintings by Kurosawa that were later old-fashioned by him as storyboards for the film. In a 41-minute segment called “Image: Kurosawa’s Continuity”, hundreds of such paintings are shown, accompanied by sound clips from the films. In a unruffled gallery piece called “A Vision Realized”, there are about 20 of the paintings placed side by side with tranquil photos from the film. Many of these same paintings are also reprinted on the 45-page booklet that comes with this DVD.

The booklet also include 3 improbable essays. As is usually the case, Criterion took the pains of including different writings that don’t duplicate one another. One essay deals with the film itself, its art and its history. Another one is a Sight-and-Sound interview with Kurosawa. The third one covers Kurosawa himself biographically.

The disc also comes with a well-made 41-minute making-of documentary that is comprised of mostly interviews, stills, and clips from KAGEMUSHA. It’s portion of a 2003 series called “Akira Kurosawa: It is Astonishing to Manufacture” (other episodes of this series are available on Criterion DVDs of IKIRU, THE LOWER DEPTHS, and STRAY DOG) . In Japanese with optional English subtitles, it has interview segments of the cast and crew, including Kurosawa, Nakadai, Kota Yui (the child actor, who is now grown up), and others. They narrate the challenges they faced, the artistic and technical choices they made, and a few droll anecdotes.

Also included are trailers, a few whiskey commercials Kurosawa made on the state of KAGEMUSHA (other than the monetary reasons for which they were made, there is nothing special about these commercials), and a 20-minute interview segment with George Lucas and Francis Coppola, who praise Kurosawa’s genius and lament that the film business often doesn’t accommodate non-commercial films, even those by gigantic directors.

Masada is one of the most eagerly anticipated DVD releases of the year. This Classic TV 1981 miniseries is arguably one of the greatest ever produced in its genre, and garnered a lot of awards in its day. It is MORE than highly recommended!

Buy,Download, Or Stream Masada – The Complete Epic Mini-Series! Click Here

It is well written and has a stellar cast that more than lived up to the script. The series, based on Ernest K. Gann’s historical original The Antagonists, is a dramatization of a documented revolt by nearly a thousand Jerusalem Jews against Roman oppressors in A.D. 72 to 73.

Epic in its scope, the actors bring nobility and pathos to the ultimately arresting and tragic narrative. Following a city-wide siege by Rome’s soldiers, Jewish Zealots recede into a desert fortress in the mountains of Masada of Judea. It is from that remote state that they originate their last stand against the tyrannical Roman Empire. Amazingly, their defensive battlement is strong enough to convince the enemy to negotiate after a two-year battle!

The shiny Peter O’Toole, portrays Cornelius Flavius Silva, commander of the Roman legions, while Peter Strauss (who was cast in several miniseries in the 80’s) portrays the Zealot leader Eleazar ben Yair, who extinguish up developing an improbably respect for each other during the life-and-death struggle.

O’Toole, is unique from the Roman conquest of Judea. Exhausted emotionally and physically, he has been affected by the constant warring, but remains the ruthless Commander of the elite Tenth Legion. He yearns to return home to Italy, but is prevented from doing so by a violent uprising of a minute band of dauntless Jews led by the volatile renegade soldier, Eleazar ben Yair (Strauss) .

Silva is ordered to lift Eleazar and his followers. He is beset by internal strife because the brutal desert conditions have his legion teetering on the brink of mutiny, while he finds himself falling in fancy with a Jewess (portrayed with sensitivity by Barbara Carerra.) At the same time, Pomponius Falco, portrayed by David Warner, is working to assume his drawl.

Inside the fortress, Eleazar is struggling to maintain his followers together. A diverse mix of defected soldiers, wanted criminals along with women and children totally about 900, they struggle to win enough food and water to survive their intrepid stand against impossible, truly hopeless odds.

The actors leave nothing on the cutting room floor in their heart wrenching renditions of their unforgettable characters. Somehow, O’Toole brings humanity to his character, while Strauss is integrity, fury and courage personified.

Both of their characters possess the negotiations are actual, and describe each side in obedient faith, struggling to win a intention out of the deadly status.

Unfortunately, neither realizes that Rome has no draw of yielding, but instead sends thousands of soldiers in a spoiled seige of Masada resulting in one of the worst tragedies in Jewish history.

Masada was brilliantly directed by Boris Sagal (The Omega Man), and the musical bag is unforgettably arresting.

As a teacher of old history, I am well aware of the theories surrounding the topple of Masada, as well as the cited inaccuracies in this film. However, for sheer entertainment and quality of performance, Masada is collected one vast movie!

Buy,Download, Or Stream Masada – The Complete Epic Mini-Series! Click Here

Be advised that the shorter version (2 hours) omits a substantial deal of material included in the worthy longer mini-series format. Nevertheless, for the average viewer, the abridged version is packed with enough sage drama to suit unbiased delicate.

Peter O’Toole’s Flavius Silva is peerless. His emotionless eloquence is an qualified portrayal of the general of Rome’s undefeated tenth legion sharp the 900 Jewish raiders who have fled to Masada’s heights. Peter Strauss (Eleazar) nearly matches O’Toole’s brilliance as the fiery leader of the Jewish rebels, who buy to die ’stealing victory’ from the Romans rather than surrendering.

I have been to Masada twice, and honestly–it was nearly impossible to vow that the film really wasn’t shot at the place! The highlight of the film is the massive siege engine’s ascent up the Roman ramp, and the battering ram’s assault on the wall. The concluding suicide sequence is handled with reserve and tact.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Masada – The Complete Epic Mini-Series! Click Here

The final forty minutes are underscored by an exhilarating musical glean that serves to heighten the tension as the inevitable outcome nears. The kill is replete with superbly written dialogue, as well as attention to detail in evidencing the engineering expertise of Used Rome.

Because considerable of what is known about the true memoir of Masada is speculation, the less one knows about the incident, the more one can savor the film. Seen for what it–great entertainment, and not a history lesson, Masada will not fail to please.

This is one of the better Anime’s to advance out in the states and obtain air time on TV. The prove appears on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim due to it’s graphic violence. I am definite though that if you are looking at getting this plot you probably are already watching it. This is probably the best engage for getting the episodes. This place includes volumes 1 and 2 or episodes 1-9. The site also includes volume one of the Manga, OST 1, and what is best described as a radio point to containing the characters on a cd. It also includes 3 booklets over the shows main characters with interviews from the creators. The case itself is sturdy with artwork on all sides and on the interior. If you live in a major city I would suggest picking this up from Best Catch as it is a diminutive bit cheaper, not worthy though. If you are going to have it shipped than amazon would be the best bet.

This is a improbable and unbelievable anime. Lots of excitement and drama and characters that live in all kinds of shades of grey. I truly relish this anime. The box state is excellently done with a very ravishing box and loads of fantastic extras. I especially appreciated the manga.

So why the 3 star review? well this first pressing of discs appears to be spoiled. Bandai is experimenting with unusual copy protection and it causes serious problems for many DVD players. In particular seizures at episode 3 in disc 1 and episode 9 in disc2. That is provided that it works at all. People using blu-ray and in particular PS3 players appear to have considerable better success rates though.

this is a lavish, astonishing production, with a cast that is so comfortable with the language. They bring out the beauty of the words, and clarity to their meaning.

Norma Shearer, despite being more than twice Juliet’s age, plays her exquisitely…I gain her to be the loveliest and most beautiful of the veil Juliets I’ve seen.

Leslie Howard, who was 42 at the time, is handsome. With his perfect musical mutter and enunciation, he’s a joy to view and listen to…what a pity that he didn’t film more Shakespeare…a Howard “Hamlet” (which he had a colossal success with on Broadway), would have certainly been a film fancy.

Also large is John Barrymore’s flamboyant Mercutio, and Edna May Oliver is my all-time approved Nurse.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Romeo and Juliet! Click Here

Though I believe the imaginitive and slightly bizarre Baz Luhmann/Leonardo DiCaprio version is astounding and a must-see (as is the fight scene in the Zeffirelli production!) what makes this George Cukor version so special is the poetry of the language…if you want to hear the words spoken as I’m determined Shakespeare intended, give this film a try.

It’s wonderful how often the legendary Irving Thalberg was allowed to obtain M.G.M. “prestige pictures” that produced awed reviews and spotty box-office receipts. It’s even more wonderful how often he required his wife, actress Norma Shearer, to star in them, to the eventual detriment of her career. As suitable as Shearer was, she acquired a reputation as a star of stately, lifeless movies made to please no one but her husband.

The distinguished exception to Thalberg’s bustle of helpful Shearer failures was “Romeo and Juliet”. Although it conformed to the norm by not making grand money, it was a very sparkling film, far better than most filmed Shakespeare.

Norma was 36 when the movie was shot, and it was feared she was a bit mature for the section. The dilemma was tackled by hiring an even older Romeo, 43-year-old Leslie Howard. The supporting cast was the best in the business- John Barrymore as Mercutio, Basil Rathbone as Tybalt, Edna May Oliver as the Nurse, Reginald Denny as Benvolio, and Violet Kemble-Cooper as Lady Capulet. George Cukor was tapped as director, and Agnes de Mille choreographed the period dance that is the highlight of the lovers’ first meeting.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Romeo and Juliet! Click Here

Production values were wonderful, even for a Shearer movie. The creamily lit photography flattered the stars, and the props and sets were radiant. The exterior plot for the balcony scene took up all of M.G.M’s Stage Sixteen, then the largest soundstage in the world; there was so grand precise vegetation that the building began producing its possess weather. The costumes were a bit over-the-top; those for the supporting cast are highly theatrical, and the star wardrobe is intended to flatter at the expense of authenticity (Shearer’s hairstyle is that of a boy of the period, not a young woman) .

All the lavishness in the world would not have mattered if the cast and crew hadn’t delivered, but they did. Under the tutelage of Constance Collier, Shearer turned in a touchingly tender Juliet, actually getting the best contemporary reviews of any cast member. Howard’s Romeo was a bit perfunctory, but serene managed a nice sense of mischief in the early scenes. Basil Rathbone’s prideful Tybalt was the allotment he was born to play, and Oliver’s Nurse crammed the maximum of bawdiness and fun into a section badly nick to comply with the demands of the censors. The surprise casting- and performance- of the film was Andy Devine as Peter, the Nurse’s servant. It should have been wildly incongruous, but Devine’s raspy yell and simple demeanour were perfect for the section.

Two scenes stand out in the memory. One is the stately pavane being danced when Romeo first spies Juliet. Shearer’s timing and subtlety benefit her well here; she interacts with her nominal dancing partner, Paris, and with Romeo on the sidelines, keeping time to the dance and losing it, sending messages of admire with her eyes while her body attempts vainly to contain an appearance of propriety.

The other is Barrymore’s turn as Mercutio; it’s said he was drunk during distinguished of the filming, and that the recall of his biggest scene ancient in the final slit was the only usable one. None of Barrymore’s problems exhibit on film; his hooting, larky performance is a miracle of droll timing and not to be missed.

The film has its minute problems; no one was able to lick the story’s inherent lack of action at the demolish, and the vitality of the film lapses into talkiness in a few later stretches. There is a lapse of judgement in one space where Romeo and Juliet kiss; the otherwise current music switches to Tchaikovsky’s “Romeo and Juliet”, dragging the scene into cliche. And director Cukor later bemoaned the lack of “garlic and the Mediterranean” in the film’s glimpse and feel.

It’s smooth something very rare on film: Shakespeare that is well and respectfully adapted for the conceal, accessible to any viewer, and beautifully played. Of all the versions of “Romeo and Juliet” on film, this is the one that tells the fable best.

Two hours is not enough time to go into depth about any of the musicals that were celebrated during the 60s but this DVD gives an worthy overview of most of them. Hosted by Shirley Jones, other stars (Shirley MacLaine, George Chakaris, Rita Moreno, Juliet Prowse, etc) give their comments throughout. I appreciate musicals and this era was a time of change, when teenagers spent more money and the Hollywood system of contracting with obvious stars was no longer obliging. Some of the movies covered were “Bells Are Ringing, Can Can, West Side Chronicle, Music Man, Flower Drum Song, Space Blooming, Gypsy, Hard Days Night, My Exquisite Lady, Sound of Music, Sweet Charity, Comic Girl”, and more) . It would be impossible to have any history of Musicals in the 60s and not include the Elvis Presley movies and the Beach ones. If you savor musicals you will fancy this series. It will fabricate you hunger to view each of your favorites in their fleshy editions. Nearly all are now available on DVD.

The 1960s were a captivating time of change for the movie musical, yet this episode of this series doesn’t observe them in any depth and proves to be the most disappointing so far, mainly because of what it omits. The 50s and 70s in this series magnificent remarkable covers in one draw or another (albeit often briefly) every movie musical made in that decade. This version spends so distinguished time on the rock n roll movies that it fails to quiz the execute “the Sound of Music” had on movie musicals, when a multitude of ample copy cart musicals came out and flopped, even though some were genuine and in some cases very agreeable. Some of the musicals this doco fails to inquire or even mention include “Star”, “Darling Lili”, “Song of Norway”, “Goodbye Mr Chips”to name a few, some of which have had a novel appreciation built for them since their unusual release, but this doco spends so noteworthy time on abominable Elvis Presley movies and Beatles movies, it has no time to ask enough the exact movie musicals especially of the latter share of the 60s, of course remarkable time is spent on “West Side Epic” etc,but there is so mighty more of the record to recount and they impartial dont do it. I look they are releasing a whole dwelling on the rock n roll movie musicals, if they had left all the Beatles and Presley stuff to that doco we might have had a more balanced witness at lawful movie musicals of this era.

Take a ogle at the box mask. That is handsome distinguished all you really need to know about “Lady Ninja Kasumi” (”Sanada Kunoichi Ninpo-den: Kasumi”) and whether or not it is the kind of thing you are enthusiastic in. It is exactly what you are expecting, a B-movie Pink Film with a lady ninja-theme. The company that puts out this series is called Junk Films, and they have produced such other classics as “Death Penalty Female Prisoner Saori”. And there you have it.

Oh, there is a record. Dreadful Kasumi and her runt brother are orphaned, but taken in by a local warlord. Kasumi joins the kunoichi, the lady ninjas, in order to work and protect her minute bother. There are some spies and intrigues, and some entirely unspectacular fight scenes. The costumes are nice, but the whole thing has a feel of being shot on digital video, and you know that this is not a high-budget production. The film is based on an erotic manga series, but I have never read that so don’t know how well it holds up. Director Hiroyuki Kawasaki normally makes anime flicks like “Mouse” and “Sakura Wars”, so this may have been his first time with live actors.

But if you are getting this, you are really getting it for the glorious Yonmi, not for the legend. She looks tall in her ninja costumes, and is appropriately bouncy for the genre. Being a Pink Film, the nudity is strictly T&A the three sex scenes are of the softcore variety. Not anywhere approach a colossal film, but then you weren’t expecting that. For what it is, it does a pleasant job. The girls are splendid, the station is decent, and there are far worse entries in the genre.

The three DVD of the narrative of Kasumi that I have seen each has a different actress play the role of Kasumi. Episode one and three are the better of the three, while number two is detached a dazzling myth line the actress is noticeable not the same woman. The number three woman may not be the same woman as in number one, but she looks stop to the same.

….The year of The Transformers!!! It’s about time! I’m 25 years faded and i’m definite that others from my generation aged to employ their afternoons with their friends transforming their autobots and decepticons and talking smack on which ones we bought. I opinion about ordering this DVD dwelling for some time but had held off. I view it was rather pricey. Along came by birthday, though, and I decided to remove myself a petite something….

I forgot how first-rate this exhibit really was. It was incredibly staunch to the each of the characters and everything at this point. The announce actors are an all star cast as well.

The remastering job was very noble when you assume what they had to work with to open. They cleaned up a lot of noise and dirt off of the film and made the colors a lot more sparkling and sure. There are some occasional sound effects added, but they are not intrustive and not that frequent, really. A couple of scenes in “Heavy Metal War”, the last episode on the disc, turned out graceful unpleasant, but otherwise they did an awesome job restoring this first season hasten, even including the unusual opening of the demonstrate and the commercial bumpers.

I remember these coloring mistakes in the current series impartial as well, and it even bothered me benefit then in 1984-85 that Sunbow couldn’t seem to snort the incompatibility between Starscream, Thundercracker, and Skywarp most of the time (though as the series goes on past the first 5 or 6, they DO catch better about it…establish for the section in Heavy Metal War where there are two Starscreams side by side, one of which was supposed to be Skywarp) .

I wish Rhino would select out the wearisome cartoon openings on their videos and DVDs, though. While I know they are mostly a children’s video company, with things like Transformers and GI Joe, they are mostly catering to adults…adults who don’t want to sit through a cartoon rhino dressed like Elvis at the inaugurate of each disc while we wait for the menu to appear.

Overall, if you grew up with this novel series of Transformers, as I did, you will very powerful savor this plot. I enjoyed every exiguous of it, and can hardly wait until slack November now, where Rhino releases the first half of Season 2 in a box state. The second half of Season 2 follows in the Spring.

While the names of many scientists are known by being assigned to units of measurement, Albert Einstein is the only one whose name is applied as a description. His last name is now dilapidated as a metaphor for genius, and he is the most noted scientist who ever lived. That reputation is well-deserved, in that his ideas concerning general relativity were so revolutionary that some of the experimental verification did not occur for decades. Furthermore, most anecdotal reports are that when it was published, there were only three people in the world, including Einstein himself, who could even understand it. His public persona was that of an eccentric genius, with wild, uncombed hair and a lack of socks. However, his private life has rarely if ever been investigated, and that is the main point of this video.

It turns out that he was privately very arrogant. So great so that his physicist friend Niels Bohr once told him in exasperation to conclude telling God what to do. When he was getting a divorce from his first wife, he boldly offered her the proceeds from his Nobel prize, which was not awarded until years later. As a husband and a father, he turned out to be wanting, although in his first marriage, it is easy to be sympathetic to both parties. He met his first wife, Milena while both were students and at that time, they spoke of an knowing partnership. When his first child was born before they were married, they kept it level-headed although he spoke lovingly about mother and daughter in his letters. However, his location as a Swiss civil servant would have made a marriage after the birth awkward, so for reasons that are composed unexplained, the daughter suddenly disappears from the records and they then gain married. Milena was also a physics student who failed her final exams twice. Then, once the miracle year of 1905 arrived and Einstein began to be heralded as the greatest physicist since Newton, his stature rose quickly. His meteoric rise to fame was probably farther and faster than anyone else in history. Quite frankly, you could have probably counted on your fingers the number of people alive then who possessed the intellect to be an vivid partner for Einstein. Therefore, it is not surprising that the tension in their marriage grew to such an extent that they parted and then divorced.

His relationship with his second wife was an original one. She tended his house, but they kept separate beds and she was not allowed to disturb him when he was in his spy…. This was the first time I had ever heard anything about Einstein as a randy mature man, which I purchase to exhibit that fame in any manufacture attracts young women. His relationship with his two sons from his first marriage was never cessation, as Einstein became more and more withdrawn from human contact. One was diagnosed as a schizophrenic and was institutionalized until his death. The other became a professor but very rarely saw his father.

Generally, I collect personal revelations about celebrities to be very slow and monotonous. However, in this case it is a major exception. Like many others, Einstein is a hero to me and details about his life beyond the physics stammer elements of his character that get him even more great in my eyes. All of the material that I have encountered to date has reinforced the solitary genius, but now you contemplate him as a headstrong young man who grew up to be a similar adult. Learning that he was a bit of a scamp makes him more refreshingly human in my eyes. This is an noble video for science classes, in that it shows the human side of the most illustrious scientist of history. If even Einstein could have a life outside physics, then science will be a more fine career to students.

My students found this DVD not only informative, but it shed a unusual light on this moving man. As we learned about his life, there were scenes which focussed on his ideas of relativity – a suited visual learning tool. However, it was the ‘man’ unhurried these vivid ideas which captivated my students. Einstein is revealed as an ‘ordinary’ person who cared for no-one but his passion for his work. Despite his scientific contributions which rocked the world, he failed as a husband and father (quite disappointing) . A pleasurable video if one wants to really salvage to explore who Einstein really was.
